Can Hong Kong and Taiwan Navigate the Sino-US Rivalry?
Despite official Chinese assertions that the only possibilities for US-China relations are "confrontation or cooperation," it is now widely understood that the relationship will be primarily competitive, increasingly global and multi-dimensional in scope. What has been less well analyzed are the ways in which Hong Kong and Taiwan are becoming arenas for that competition – a competition that has economic, ideational and, in the case of Taiwan, geopolitical elements. These new dimensions of the Sino-American competition are evident in both the current political crisis in Hong Kong and the 2020 presidential elections in Taiwan.
