Syaru Shirley Lin is Compton Visiting Professor in World Politics at the Miller Center of Public Affairs at the University of Virginia and a Nonresident Senior Fellow in the Foreign Policy Program of Brookings Institution. She is also an Adjunct Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Chair of the Asia-Pacific Hub of the Commission on Reform for Resilience, which is reviewing the response to the COVID pandemic. Courses she has taught include theories of international political economy, cross-Strait relations and the high income trap in East Asia. Her book, Taiwan’s China Dilemma, on the impact of the evolution of Taiwanese national identity on cross-Strait economic policy was published in English by Stanford University Press in 2016 and in Chinese by Business Weekly in 2019. She is currently working on the high income trap in East Asia. Her commentary frequently appears in English and Chinese media. Professor Lin graduated cum laude from Harvard College and earned her masters and Ph.D. from the department of politics and public administration at the University of Hong Kong. She has also studied at Keio University in Tokyo and the Complutense University of Madrid.

Professor Lin retired as a partner at Goldman Sachs, where she led the Principal Investment Area for Asia ex-Japan. In that capacity, she spearheaded the firm’s investments in many technology start-ups and was a founding board member of Alibaba Group and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation. Prior to her work in private equity and venture capital, she specialized in the privatization of state-owned enterprises in mainland China, Taiwan and Singapore.

Professor Lin’s present board service includes Goldman Sachs Asia Bank and Langham Hospitality Investments. She is also on the board of the Focused Ultrasound Foundation, a Virginia-based foundation that supports the development and adoption of a new therapeutic medical technology, and has been appointed by the Hong Kong government to the Hong Kong Committee for Pacific Economic Cooperation. She is also senior advisor to Taiwan's Talent Circulation Alliance, an initiative to promote Taiwan as a hub for talent for the region and the world.

林夏如教授是美國維吉尼亞大學米勒公共事務中心康普頓國際關係訪問教授,亦是布魯金斯學會外交政策項目的非常駐資深研究員。她是香港中文大學的客座教授,並擔任「堅韌社會再造委員會」Reform for Resilience Commission 亞太中心的主席,該委員會致力於籌建後疫情時代之經濟、健康與環境的永續發展。她教授的課程包括「國際政治經濟學理論」、「兩岸關係」以及「東亞高收入陷阱」。林夏如教授的新書《台灣的中國兩難》探討了台灣人認同的變化對兩岸經濟政策的影響,該書在2016年由美國史丹佛大學出版社印行, 中譯版已於2019年由商周出版。林教授目前正在研究東亞的高收入陷阱問題。她的時事評論和文章散見於中英文報章媒體。林教授是哈佛大學的優等畢業生,並持有香港大學國際公共事務碩士學位及政治與公共行政學博士學位。她曾留學慶應大學和馬德里康普斯頓大學。

林教授曾任高盛集團合夥人,負責亞洲地區私募投資,首創高盛在亞洲的創業風險投資,同時更啟動日本的投資業務,她曾擔任阿里巴巴、中芯國際等公司的創始董事會成員。林教授也曾參與中國大陸、台灣及新加坡國有企業私有化工作。

林教授現任高盛集團亞洲銀行與朗廷酒店集團獨立董事,也身兼維吉尼亞聚焦超音波研科基金會的董事,致力於支持新型醫療技術的研發。 她受香港政府委任成為太平洋經濟合作香港委員會成員,協助香港經濟發展。她也擔任台灣TCA人才循環大聯盟資深顧問,協助推動台灣國際人才的流通,連接台灣與全世界。
